Article 370 Review: A riveting tale that attempts to depict an important chapter of India’s history in simple manner

Story: Movie tells the story from the point of view of Zooni Haksar (Yami Gautam) who is a Kashmiri Muslim working for the Indian intelligence. She is reeling from the grief of her father’s suicide. One day she gets to know the hideout of dreaded terrorist (Shivam Khajuria) and asks her senior Khawar Ali (Raj Arjun) for permission but he instructs her to wait.
Zooni chooses not to and executes the operation with the help of CRPF officer Yash Chauhan (Vaibhav Tatwawadi) and his team. It angers a section of political leaders, and they provoke the youth, leading to violence in the Valley. Due to disobeying the order she was transferred to New Delhi.
After a year government moves to abrogate Article 370, PMO Secretary Rajeshwari Swaminathan (Priyamani) shoulders much of the groundwork. She assembles her team and appoints Zooni to spearhead the NIA operation in Kashmir. How she becomes part of historical event and what challenges she faces in Kashmir is all about this film.

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie on its release date as liked the trailer and it’s about Article 370 of Kashmir that every Indian should watch.
Zooni Haksar, an Intelligence Field Officer, is recruited by the PMO Secretary for a classified assignment aimed at dismantling the conflict economy and combating terrorism in the Kashmir valley, just before the implementation of the abrogation of Article 370.
Article 370 story is written in such a simple manner that it can be understood by everyone. Although the abrogation of Article 370 was a complex and, in a way, a very technical affair, the same has been explained so simplistically by the two-story writers that the highly technical story becomes one of universal appeal. That’s the biggest victory of the writers. Screenplay in first half is bit slow but in 2nd half its outstanding. The tension that builds up before the abrogation of Article 370 has been brought out so beautifully by the four writers that it is palpable. The audience is on tenterhooks as the home minister and the Prime Minister plan their strategy with a very few key people who, of course, are asked to keep the impending drama strictly confidential. The last half an hour of the screenplay is so outstanding that the audience feel fulfilled by the end of it! The climax is so wonderful that one feels a sense of great achievement and pride, and, of course, utmost respect for the leaders of the country who achieved the seemingly impossible task. Yami Gautam and all others cast of this film is phenomenal so as direction. The highly technical drama moves hand-in-hand with the human drama and makes the audience feel a sense of exhilaration at many points. The best thing is how it never uses hate as a medium to engage viewers and instead opts for a subtle but effective approach. In today’s time, it is easy to enter that territory and offend many just to appease a section of the audience, but this movie doesn’t fall for that trap.
On the flipside, though the makers have tried their best to simplify the narrative, a few details might be difficult to decipher. Hence, those expecting it to be a conventional entertainer might be a bit disappointed. Secondly, in places, the film gives a feeling of being one-sided and not covering all elements of the story. For instance, Article 370 was revoked for the betterment of the people of Kashmir. However, the aam junta and their hardships are never focused on the film. Lastly, the assassination attempt in the climax is nail-biting but it also raises the question of whether it actually happened in real. The interval point based on a very critical incident fails to create the desired impact. There are a number of scenes that are overdramatized and while they are interesting to watch, they result in the compromise of the storytelling. Writing of convenience again affects the authenticity with which the makers try to show all that went into the repealing of the Article 370.
Overall, movie is a gripping tale that attempts to depict an important chapter of India’s history in an entertaining and simple manner. It is an intense retelling of the abrogation. It is thoroughly engaging and entertaining, yet informative for those who have less knowledge of Indian political happenings and chronology. Powered by fantastic performances, this one is a solid entertainer. My view on this movie Highly Recommended.
