Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie in cinemas as loved the trailer and liked Suriya previous movies. Tracing two timelines, the fantasy film explores the connection between a tribal warrior and a young kid in 1070, as they reconnect under mysterious circumstances in 2024.
Kanguva story has a lot of weight. However, fails to do justice to the plot. The film starts on an interesting note with a monologue by an old woman in the year 1070 that questions the true purpose of each of us human beings’ birth, followed by another interesting sequence involving a kid named, Zeta at a lab in 2024. But what follows after these two sequences in the first half is a mess filled with people screaming all the time and very predictable pre-interval sequences. The film picks up pace when the period portions kick in especially in 2nd half when it tries to capture your attention with a couple of well-executed blocks. It works only when the audience knows the characters well and the equation between them. While the first half surely felt stunted with its progression, the second half tried to salvage a lot but was once again a rather misfire in many ways. The enmity between the two tribes and the characteristics of the five islands are imaginative. One of the special highlights of movie is Karthi’s cameo. The underwater sequences in the climax and pre-climax and the emotional scenes between Chinna Babu and Suriya are quite good. Grand visuals standout for this film. The way it captured the lush green forests and the way he and his team shot the film during the night is fantastic. Along with the crucial scenes in the movie, the rest of the action scenes were shot beautifully in accordance with the story and the period setting. Suriya gives more than a hundred per cent to the role and makes the film watchable.
On the flipside, the initial 20 minutes of the film, which features the present-day portion, is truly a test of patience. The direction is weak in several places. Certain scenes must have sounded great on paper but didn’t translate as intended on celluloid. Also, it comes at a time when viewers are probably bored of watching ruthless, animal-like humans baying for each other’s blood. The film ends with the promise of a sequel, and it fails to excite. The division between present and past wasn’t needed as it really impacts the emotions shown in the film. The emotions do not work, and the drama is flat, and this is where the film’s fate is sealed. The overacting and howling do not stop and so does the buildup which is there from frame one. When every scene is a buildup then the impact automatically reduces. Giving more screen time to important stuff rather than the cringe present moment could’ve made the film a bit better. With the period set up, it was important for the writing to define the characters well probably then the film could’ve somewhat worked. This is an important point. Without proper world building and without defining characters properly, you will just hear random names and the dialogues between them, and you won’t feel anything. As the movie underutilized an actor like Bobby Deol and shrink Disha Patani to just fill up the screen space, the additional cast also did not provide anything worthwhile. Devi Sri Prasad was disappointed big time with poor songs and a soulless & loud background score.
Overall movie is truly a lost opportunity for a film with such ambitious ideas. Had Siva delved much deeper into Kanga’s background, his family dynamics, and focused more on the period portions and the power struggle among the five clans, it could have been a much more effective film. The predictable and over-the-top screenplay, which was coupled with the poor execution, makes the film hard to watch For me it’s a worst film of Suriya career. My view on this movie Not recommended.
