IDFC First Bank Test Series 2024: New Zealand become first team to whitewash India in a home series of three or more Tests. They won 3rd & final test match by 25 runs and won the series by 3-0 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

3rd Test
Game Date: 1st November – 5th October 2024

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
New Zealand captain Tom Latham again won the toss against Team India and decided to bat first at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. One changes in Team India and Mohammed Siraj is playing today in the place of Jasprit Bumrah.

New Zealand bowled out for 235 runs in their 1st innings. India are on top after losing the toss. He feels New Zealand are a few runs short. Two big contributions from the batting order in Will Young and Daryl Mitchell. Not much from the others. Both Young and Mitchell batted superbly to make their runs. The latter battling his own body and the extreme conditions to stick it out and top score with 82. He looked to launch a few too at the end with Ajaz Patel for company but fell to a cute attempt in trying to dab wide of slip. Akash Deep started off the wickets for India but after that it was Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja. The duo shared 9 wickets between them with the latter taking a fifer. He bowled flat, quick and used the pitch to do the rest. India have not batted well in this series and still 22 overs left in the day. Daryl Mitchell scored 82 runs and Will Young scored 71 runs. For Team India, Ravindra Jadeja picked 5 wickets.

Team India scored 86/4 on Day 1 stumps. They are still trailing by 149 runs with 6 wickets in hand. That last 15 minutes has brought New Zealand strongly back into the contest. India were absolutely cruising at 4:45 pm and then Jaiswal decided to play the reverse sweep. He missed and his stumps were in a mess. For some strange reason, India sent their number 11 as a nightwatchman, not only he lasted just one ball, but he also took a review with him, both being dismissed by Ajaz Patel. Then Kohli came in, hit a boundary and then tried a cheeky single, only to come second best to Henry’s throw. 78 for 1 became 84 for 4 in no time and India have ceded away the advantage.

NZ: 235
IND: 86/4 on Day 1 stumps

Stats
– If India lose the Wankhede Test then it will be the first time since 2000 that they were clean swept by an opposition in a home Test series.

Rohit Sharma has been dismissed four times in eight innings in Tests and averages only 12.75 against the New Zealand pacer.

Ravindra Jadeja (312* wickets) surpasses Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma (311 wickets each) to break into the top five wicket takers for India in Tests.
619 Kumble
533 Ashwin
434 Kapil
417 Harbhajan
312 Jadeja

– First time Ashwin has gone wicketless in an innings against New Zealand where they were bowled out.

Day 2
Team India bowled out for 263 runs in their 1st innings and they have led of 28 runs. Useful lead but New Zealand are not too behind. Shubman Gill made a fine 90, Rishabh Pant a fiery 60 and Sundar remained unbeaten on 38, but you’d wonder as to why he’s batting at 8 or 9 in a line-up which has struggled for runs in the series. Five wickets for Ajaz Patel who bowled beautifully after lunch. The pitch is starting to become more and more spin friendly, and the visitors will feel anything more than 200 will make India feel worried. Shubman Gill scored 90 runs and Rishabh Pant scored 60 runs. For New Zealand, Ajaz Patel picked 5 wickets.

New Zealand scored 171/9 runs in their 2nd innings on Day 2 stumps. They have led of 143 runs with 1 wicket in hand. Another day of complete entertainment for the fans on a spiteful wicket. 348 runs were scored and as many as 15 wickets fell on Day 2 of the Test. On a wicket where you couldn’t really trust your defence, both set of batters went for their shots. The tone was set by Rishabh Pant who smashed the first two balls of the day to the ropes. He went on to make a 36-ball half-century, Shubman Gill held forte to top score with 90 and Washington Sundar’s 38* helped India end up with a 28-run first innings lead. Akash Deep struck with the new ball, but Will Young soldiered on, he added useful runs with Conway and Mitchell, but the Indian spinners kept plugging on and were eventually rewarded. New Zealand are effectively 143 for 9 in their second innings. India will look to remove that last wicket cheaply and then chase down the target. The series has been lost, but there’s a lot of pride to play for, notwithstanding 12 crucial WTC points. Will Young scored 51 runs and Glenn Phillips scored 26 runs. For Team India, Ravindra Jadeja picked 4 wickets.

Day 3
New Zealand bowled out for 174 runs in their 2nd innings and set the target of 146 runs to Team India. India wrap up the innings pretty quickly – just 14 balls to pick the final wicket. Time is not an issue but there’s plenty of assistance for the spinners and it’ll be a tricky chase for the hosts. Seems like India have opted for the light roller, expect the pitch to play slightly better at the start of the innings. Three five-wicket hauls in this match and make no mistake, Ajaz Patel is going to be the biggest threat. Will Young scored 51 runs and Glenn Phillips scored 26 runs. For Team India, Ravindra Jadeja picked 4 wickets.

Team India bowled out for 121 runs in their 2nd innings and lost the game by 25 runs. Incredible from the Kiwis. They are all smiles as they become the first team to inflict a 3-0 whitewash on India in India. Ajaz Patel, who picked ten wickets in an innings at this venue the last time he toured India, is the hero of this Test. Five wickets in the first innings and he ensured that India didn’t gain a big first innings lead. The Indian batters, apparently, practised against five young left-arm spinners before the start of play today. But they’ve been spin-choked by Ajaz again as the left-arm finished with a six-fer. The final innings was just Pant vs New Zealand! Chasing 146, India lost half their side inside 8 overs with just 29 runs on the board. Rohit fell playing a rash shot, Gill shouldered arms to get bowled, Kohli nicked behind, Jaiswal was trapped lbw by Phillips and Sarfaraz top-edged his sweep to deep square leg. Pant counterattacked and notched up his second fifty of the Test, once again at a SR above 100. A defensive Jadeja was caught at short leg but as long as Pant was out in the middle, India had a chance. Ajaz produced the killer blow by removing Pant, thanks to a successful review from New Zealand. Sundar and Ashwin hung around for a while, but GP picked back-to-back wickets and Ajaz wrapped up the proceedings. India 0 – 3 New Zealand! Rishabh Pant scored 64 runs and Washington Sundar scored 12 runs. For New Zealand Ajaz Patel picked 6 wickets.
