Story: Movie revolves around SP Athiyan (Rajinikanth) who is a police officer based out of Kanyakumari and lives with his wife Thara Athiyan (Manju Warrier) and nephew (Rakshan). He is however known all over India as a renowned encounter specialist often resorting to extrajudicial killings to deliver no-nonsense with the assistance of Patrick (Fahadh Faasil) a thief turned informer speedy justice.
Observing his deeds from close quarters and criticizing them is prominent lawyer and human rights activist Sathyaraj (Amitabh Bachchan) who believes that delivering instant justice through encounter killings is just as bad as delaying cases in courts for years, and that the former must not be used as an alternative for the latter.
Athiyan life takes a tumultuous turn when he meets Sharanya (Dushara Vijayan) who is a courageous schoolteacher who stands firm against injustice and also helps him to take down Ganja Mafia from city. Tragically she is murdered in a shocking turn of events in Chennai.
Chennai SP Harish (Kishore) and his team ASP Roopa Kiran (Ritika Singh) suspects an innocent tech engineer who is encountered by Athiyan but later realizes that culprit is someone else. Who is real murderer and what will he do to expose the real culprit? How is Nataraj (Rana Daggubati) connected to the story? This sets up the rest of the investigative drama and a conflict of ideologies between encountering criminals and human rights.

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie in cinemas as loved the trailer and waited to see two superstars of Indian cinema together.
SP Athiyan is a renowned encounter specialist. With the assistance of Patrick, a thief turned informer, he has solved several cases by eliminating criminals. Following a tip-off from government schoolteacher Saranya, about drugs being stashed in her school, Athiyan eliminates the drug mafia in the district. Later when Saranya is raped and murdered in Chennai, Athiyan must solve the case and punish the perpetrator.
Vettaiyan The Hunter is largely a social drama narrated in the form of an investigative thriller. The investigative portions of the film are not the strongest as it becomes predictable after a point. We get to know easily what comes next and what doesn’t. But the social drama parts of the film are strong. The serious turn brought on by the murder effectively drives the first half, while Anirudh’s background score elevates the cinematic experience. The film takes us not only on an investigative journey which makes us wonder who committed the crime and how they would catch the culprit, but also a glimpse over the emotional side of a police officer handling the case. Rajinikanth’s portrayal of the formidable encounter specialist is mesmerizing, showcasing his trademark style and charisma. The film shines with electrifying mass moments and exhilarating action sequences. The chemistry between Rajinikanth and Rana Daggubati is compelling, highlighted by engaging dialogues that enrich their scenes. Rana delivers a strong performance, especially as his character evolves in the second half. Fahadh Faasil’s role adds further layers to the story. Supporting performances from Ritika Singh and Dushara Vijayan contribute significantly to the film’s depth. Anirudh Ravichander’s music stands out, particularly his background score during action sequences, which heighten the film’s tension.
Despite its decent premise and character development, the film falls short in delivering some engaging elements that could elevate the experience further. The serious tone sometimes overshadows the emotional depth, making parts of the narrative feel drawn out. Moreover, certain scenes in the second half could benefit from tightening to improve pacing. A more logical and robust conflict for Rana’s character could have enhanced the film’s emotional stakes. While the main characters are captivating, the investigation scenes occasionally drag, and the second half doesn’t maintain the intensity established in the first half, which detracts from the overall impact. The film does not just highlight the importance of a thorough investigation, but also shows how encounter killings and other forms of police brutality disproportionately affect poorer communities. Moving ahead, the film also fails to keep the momentum it had in its narration in the second half, lagging in many instances. Film may leave you unfulfilled due to Uninteresting screenplay and direction. Overall movie is a crime action drama that works to an extent. Despite the hindrances in the second half, the film still offers something for Rajinikanth and typical south Indian film lovers. My view on this movie Time Pass.
