Spy Hindi Review: Regular spy drama could have focused more on the unexplored side of the freedom fighter
Spy Movie Rating: 2.5 Star

Just watched Spy movie in Hindi dubbed in Cinemas. Let’s focus on the complete details, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.

Cast: Nikhil Siddhartha, Iswarya Menon, Sanya Thakur, Makrand Deshpande and Abhinav Gomatam
Director: Garry BH
Release Date: 29th June 2023 in Cinemas

Story: Spy is about the death mystery of freedom fighter Subash Chandra Bose. Film begins with Khadir Khan (Nitin Mehta) who is most wanted terrorist who has become a big threat to India. RAW Agent Subhash (Aryan Rajesh) kills Khadir but under mysterious circumstances Subhash too dies.

Head of RAW (Makrand Deshpande) soon learns that Khadir is alive and plans a mission to eliminate him. Jai (Nikhil Siddhartha) is one of the agents who is the brother of Subhash. Jai has two objectives. The first one is to kill Khaadir, while the second objective is to find out who killed Subhash. He has his loyal friend Kamal (Abhinav Gomatam) on this mission.

Joining them on this mission is Saraswati (Sanya Thakur) and being a thorn on his Jai’s side is his ex-girlfriend (Iswarya Menon). Also missing are files pertaining to Subhash Chandra Bose that contain secrets the country has kept hidden so far. As the drama progresses, it emerges that Abdul Rehman (Jisshu Sengupta) and not Khadir Khan is the mastermind terrorist.

Will Jay eliminate Abdul Rehman? Who is behind his brother Subhash death? Why Netaji files are missing and how Jay deals with all this situation is all about this movie.

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie on release day in cinemas as it looks very engaging and loved actor last movie.

A R&AW agent unravels the connection between a notorious arms dealer and the hidden secrets of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, risking everything to protect India from impending chaos.

Spy story is routine as there’s no attempt to offer anything novel. Anirudh Krishnamurthy’s screenplay treads the beaten path. As one has seen many secret service agent films in the past, the lack of novelty in these gets underlined. Though the movie has an interesting point about Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, the makers didn’t succeed in weaving a neat screenplay around it. The narrative is bland for the most part, and it doesn’t excite us much. Those who expect thrilling moments will get disappointed due to the flat narration. There isn’t anything new that has been showcased here, and the movie is just another regular spy thriller. Things like honey trapping were not executed properly. Only there are a couple of scenes that talk about Subhash Chandra Bose, and the movie could have been better had the makers focused more on the unexplored side of the freedom fighter.

The way Garry begins the film, you expect Jai to have moments where he’s torn between his desire to serve the country and finding his brother’s killer. However, that rarely happens. His brother’s death is mostly used as a catalyst to rile him up when needed. The files pertaining to Subhash Chandra Bose and the Battle of Kohima are unique, yet they’re explained away haphazardly in the middle of action-packed scenes. A villain is introduced too late in the story for you to care and his placeholder doesn’t seem that threatening either. Essentially, a lot of ideas in the film are never pushed to their limit because there’s too many of them to begin with. You might predict a lot of the ‘twists,’ but the film does hold your attention for a point of time. The love story throws a wrench in the proceedings, with unintentionally funny scenes. There’s also an odd lack of urgency in the way it all plays out even if you know time’s ticking. The writing just needed to be crisper and better.

Overall, movie comes at a time when you’ve kind of seen various permutations and combinations of the same story told in different ways with varying motivations in numerous languages. Garry’s film has its heart in the right place, but it lacks the spunk to stand out. It could have been much better had the makers concentrated more on Subhash Chandra Bose. Spy will end up being an okay watch, provided you keep your expectations in check. My view on this movie Time Pass.
