Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo Review: A rare show that makes you laugh, makes you think and transports you to a rollercoaster-watching experience

Just watched Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo on Disney Plus Hotstar. Let’s analyze the cast, release date, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this web series.

Story: The series starts with a Deputy CM’s son overdosing on a drug in a nightclub, which leads a passionate ACP Proshun Jain (Jimit Trivedi) to track down the drug’s creator.
Series moved to Rajasthan where Savitri aka Rani Ba (Dimple Kapadia) is a charismatic, influential figure running a cooperative that employs and empowers hordes of women sharing a traumatic past like hers. While she leads the game, her daughter-in-laws Bijlee (Isha Talwar) and Kajal (Angira Dhar) take care of the business. Along with them, the triumph card is Shanta (Radhika Madan) as she is the one who knows the formula for making Flamingo. They all work remotely but with full power.
Savitri’s two sons Harish (Ashish Verma) and Kapil (Varun Mitra) bumming around in the US and back home on a break and both are clueless about their mother’s real profession. They are more liability than asset but after few circumstances they wanted to help Savitri in her business. Savitri also has an adopted son Dhiman (Udit Arora) who helps her run the business. He is her weak spot, but he is treading on thin ice as he’s embroiled in a relationship with Savitri’s daughter Shanta.
However, running a narcotics business is not that easy as the state police are busy looking into the matter. As they investigate the drug business, the dark clouds of a threat loom over Savitri’s empire, which is threatened by Monk (Deepak Dobriyal) who is a formidable and menacing adversary. To add to the mayhem, her decision to appoint a successor leads to chaos as all daggers are drawn within the family. What happen next is all about this series.

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer planned to watch this series on premiere day because loved the trailer and focused on women empowerment.
Savitri, the matriarch of a massive cartel in the lawless Borderlands, opens up a battle for succession to find her heir in a murky world of drugs and violence. It is set in the nondescript town of Hastipur in Northwest India, where Rani and her cohort’s rule with an iron fist.
The words Saas and Bahu may be technically apt to describe the characters of this show, but they are also the most misleading. That’s because this Saas-Bahu saga is nothing like the daily soaps featuring mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law playing petty kitchen politics. These are feisty women, who shoot first, ask questions later. They run a complex and sophisticated drug cartel from a nondescript town in rural India. It features an impressive line-up of powerful women characters played efficiently by almost each and every actor. The show’s setting in the parched and arid land of north-western India is pitch perfect, and the costumes and makeup of each character is impressive. The rustic makeovers complete with ancient tattoos and ethnic ornaments have the requisite detailing. Sachin-Jigar’s original score adds a menacing and mystical layer to the raw brutality of the screenplay.
On the flipside, even with a lot of time spent, it still feels paced up and incomplete at many levels. Like when the matriarch announces she is hunting for an heir, it all feels like just a plot device to create a conflict and not an organic twist. Track of Monica Dogra does not seem much add-on in this series. The way show begins was spine-chilling but does not keep the momentum going on due to stretched length. Why Rani Ba kept away Kajal son from her and how it reached to monk can confuse you. Although in the next season this may be answer by makers.
Overall, it is one of those rare shows that makes you laugh, makes you think, and transports you to a rollercoaster-watching experience. Homi Adajania offers a riveting story that will keep you hooked per episode. If you are a fan of raw, gritty and explicit drama, then this is definitely for you. It stands tall on its own as a show that remains unapologetically brutal both in slaying patriarchy and showing the raw power of a woman wronged. My view on this series Recommended but don’t watch it with your family.
