Girl Hostel 2.0 Web Series Review: It fails to take the concept to its next level that we expect from a TVF series
Girl Hostel 2.0 Web Series Review: 2.5 stars
Just watched Girl Hostel 2.0 web series on Sony LIV. So let’s analyze the cast, release date, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this web series.
Cast: Srishti Shrivastava, Ahsaas Channa, Parul Gulati, Shreya Mehta, Gagan Arora, Simran Natekar, Trupti Khamkar and Jayati Bhatia
Director: Chaitanya Kumbhakonam
Release Date: 19th Feb 2021 (On Sony LIV)
Duration: 5 Episodes/ 20 Minutes
Story: Girls Hostel 2.0 is 2nd season of this series. The first season of Girls Hostel by Girliyappa is available on Netflix and season is streaming on Sony LIV. Season 2 starts from where season 1 ended and the season is more about politics and drama. This season is mostly about college politics and elections.
As the first episode takes off campus bully Ramya Mantri (Shreya Mehta) is bribing Dean Sarla Desai (Jayati Bhatia) with an expensive watch so the idea of polls is scrapped and she be allowed to carry on uncontested. Arrogant and cocky medical student Ramya agrees to shift the girls of the dental hostel to an alternate accommodation. The new space is much smaller and has major water shortage.
The students protest against the injustice being meted out them and before you know it dental student Zahira Ali (Parul Gulati) challenges Ramya’s presidency. And thus begins a no-holds-barred fight for power. Once Student President elections are announced, Zahira and Ramya go all out to woo other students for votes. The final face-off between the two is riveting.
Richa (Ahsaas Channa) and Mili (Simran Natekar) the new girls are now more assertive and trying to help Zahira in her fight to rid the campus of Ramya’s dominance. Richa also gets the only romantic track in the story, with the affable Aarav (Gagan Arora). While for a major part, this season focuses on the Student President election, it also makes a solid point on not tolerating sexual harassment. That part where Jo (Srishti Shrivastava) gets to the root of the problem and decides to teach the boys a lesson is oddly satisfying.
Positives
1. Excellent performance
2. Refreshing story
3. Length
4. Screenplay
5. Dialogues
Negatives
1. Climax
2. Repetitive
3. Direction
Durgesh Tiwary’s View : When I watched the trailer it looks interesting and connecting due to it’s storyline and planned to watch this series.
You can watch the second season without having watched the first, the context is more-or-less set up because I have also not watched first season of this series. It is set in SVM University, Pune, about a group of girls studying dentistry, living at the hostel. While the first season was successful in establishing the base of the story and its characters, it’s actually season 2 where we see the characters develop and the narrative takes a serious turn.
The lead characters of the show fighting for the position of the President of the hostel. There are groups and now they are fighting for the win, everyone one has their own set of problems and this lead to a funny and dramatic hostel Life Drama, who is a winner and what happened next. The first season was pretty much on a lighter note and gave us funny insights of events happening in the Girls Hostel.
The show is about female friendship and hostel life, and tries to cover one or other social issue in each episode. Overall While taking us on a nostalgia trip, the show also explains how issues like security and fair elections are so relevant even at present times. Perhaps more episodes would have helped the show seem more complete. Nonetheless, the storyline, characters make it a good weekend watch. My view on this web series (Time Pass)
