99 Songs Movie Rating: 1.5 stars

Just watched 99 Songs movie on Amazon Prime Video. So let’s analyze the cast, release date, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.

Cast: Ehan Bhat, Edilsy Vargas, Tenzin Dalha, Manisha Koirala, Lisa Ray, Warina Hussain, Rahul Ram and Ranjit Barot
Director: Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy
Release Date: 21st May 2021 (On Netflix and Jio Cinema)

Story: 99 Songs is debut film as writer and producer from music maestro A.R Rahman. Film was released in cinemas on 16th April 2021 and today it is released on Jio Cinema and Netflix.

Jay (Ehan Bhat) is a college student doing his masters. He is in love with fellow student Sophie (Edilsy Vargas). Sophie is a fine artist and a fashion designer, though she cannot speak. Yet, the duo understand each other perfectly. She organizes fashion shows and is the daughter of a rich businessman Sanjay Singhania (Ranjit Barot).

Singhania sees a spark in Jay. Aware that Jay loves his daughter and wants to marry her, Singhania makes a business proposal to him dealing with setting up a music company. But Jay has other plans. He does not want to make a business out of his passion for music. This infuriates Singhania because he is convinced that Jay would not be able to look after his daughter whom he has raised in the lap of luxury.

He challenges him to compose a 100 songs before he can think of marrying Sophie and Jay accepts the challenge. Jay’s bosom pal Polo (Tenzin Dalha) takes him to Shillong to work on Singhania’s challenge. He gets introduced to Jazz music by the singer/owner of a nightclub Sheela (Lisa Ray). He becomes a trained jazz pianist through her mentorship and is on the way to fulfilling a part of his education.

But things go downhill after there in Shillong when Jay finds himself trapped in legal matters. Meanwhile, Sophie pines for him but is unable to establish contact with him. Circumstances lead him astray from the journey till a mysterious stranger from his past (Rahul Ram) comes into his life and takes him back to his roots, completing his journey.

Who is mysterious stranger? What happens to the challenge? What happens to Jay? Does he succeed in the field of music? Do Jay and Sophie meet finally? You need to watch this film to get the answers of these questions.

Positives
1. Good Performances
2. Cinematography
3. 2 Songs

Negatives
1. Climax
2. Length
3. Story lacks Novelty
4. Music
5. Direction

Durgesh Tiwary’s View : When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch it once premiere on OTT and today Netflix and Jio Cinema released this movie.

When a young musician embarks on a journey to make the song that can reunite him with the love of his life and also change the world, things don’t go quite as planned. As he hits rock-bottom, will music come to the rescue?

Rahman had written the script for the film in 2011, with Eros International initially announced to produce the film in August 2013. After Eros backed out of the project, Rahman stated that he will produce the film under his own banner YM Movies. From Story to direction nothings works in favor of this film. Movie has all the elements of an emotional love story with music at its core. With better songs and more conviction in its execution, this one had all the potential to become a chart-topper. My view on this movie (Not Recommended)
